To celebrate Independent Bookshop Week, here are six historical bookshops from across the country
Independent Bookshop Week will take place from 15 to 22 June this year, with exciting initiatives and events celebrating independent bookshops and booksellers nationwide and the crucial role independent bookshops play in their communities. To kick start this year’s festivities, we are sharing six historical bookshops from across the country.
Lindum Books, Lincoln
This bookshop is steeped in history, located in a Grade 2-listed Georgian building with a beautiful Venetian bay window and quirky shopfront, nestled on the historical Bailgate in Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter.

Niche Comics Bookshop, Huntingdon
Visitors are welcomed to this Tudor-era bookshop, built in 1573 and retaining many of its original features. A part of the Huntingdonshire History Festival, and a recipient of a green plaque from the Huntingdon and Godmanchester Civic Society, the traditional timber-framed house is a staple of the local community.

Script Haven, Worcester
The bookshop was a hotel where Charles Dickens once stayed in 1858. A unique, historical and listed building marked with a blue plaque and with sixteenth century beams, visitors can visit Script Haven in the centre of Worcester, overlooked by the majestic Worcester Cathedral.

The Little Bookshop, Skipton
Located in Craven Court Shopping Centre, which was once a sixteenth century theatre, The Little Bookshop in Skipton is part of a bustling alleyway reminiscent of Diagon Alley, framed with partly listed stone walls. This historical bookshop makes for a perfect book buying experience.

Argonaut Books, Edinburgh
One of the most famous locations of Scottish literature and film, Argonaut Books is in the old and architecturally significant Leith Central Station, which also happens to where the pivotal and eponymous scene in Trainspotting takes place.

Little Acorn Bookstore, Derry
A cultural hub, Little Acorn Bookstore is situated in a three-storey Georgian building that was previously a private residence. Don’t miss the famous reclaimed schoolteachers’ chairs covered in hundreds of signatures from authors, actors, directors, broadcasters, musicians, artists and many more: the LegenDerry Writers’ Chair and the Theatre and Media Chair. A typewriter museum is due to open in the summer of 2024.
